Frequently asked questions

Is FamilyTree Free really free?
Yes. There is no trial, no paid tier and no feature behind a paywall. The site is meant to carry itself through advertising, which only loads if you agree to it.
Do I need an account?
No. There is no sign-up and no login, because there is no server an account could live on. Open the app and start.
Where is my family data stored?
Only in your browser, on your device (IndexedDB). Nothing is uploaded, synced or sent to us — we could not see it even if we wanted to.
What happens if I clear my browser data?
Your tree can be cleared with it. That is what the backup is for: one click downloads the whole tree, photos included, as a single JSON file you can load again at any time. Do it regularly.
Can I print or share my family tree?
You can export the tree as an image (PNG) to print or send. To let someone keep working on it, share the backup file — a share link is not possible without a server.
Can I import a GEDCOM file?
No, GEDCOM import and export are not available at the moment. If you already keep a large tree in another program, FamilyTree Free is not the right place to move it yet.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes, in the mobile browser. For larger trees with many generations a tablet or computer is far more comfortable.
